Cold-Drawn Round Steel

Cold  Drawn  Round  Steel

Precision cold drawn round bar in φ5–φ100 mm — bright surface, tight tolerance, ready for automatic machining.

Cold drawn round steel is manufactured by pulling hot rolled round bar through a precision die at room temperature. Compared with hot rolled round bar, the cold drawing process delivers tighter dimensional tolerance, a brighter surface finish and better straightness, which reduces machining allowance and tool wear in downstream turning, milling and CNC production.

Suzhou Zhenfu Cold-Drawn Steel Co., Ltd. produces cold drawn round steel in diameters from φ5 mm to φ100 mm, together with bright drawn round steel in smaller diameter ranges, from source-controlled carbon, alloy and free-cutting grades. With an annual capacity of 150,000 tons, four-stage quality control, CE certification and over 18 years of manufacturing experience, we supply cold drawn round bar to automotive, machinery, hydraulic and fastener manufacturers worldwide.

Common grades include 45#, 20#, Q235, Q355/Q355D, 40Cr, 42CrMo and 12L14, supplied to GB standards with comparable JIS, EN and ASTM equivalents. For shaft and machine parts choose 45# or 40Cr; for heavy-duty service 42CrMo; for high-speed free-cutting applications 12L14.

Full grade comparison tables (GB ↔ JIS ↔ EN ↔ ASTM) are available on the product detail page.

Applications

Cold drawn round steel is widely used for shafts, pins, axles, piston rods, hydraulic cylinders, fasteners, spacers, rollers and CNC machined components. Typical end-use industries include:

  • Automotive parts — steering shafts, chassis pins, transmission rods, seat frames, shock-absorbing components

  • Machinery and equipment — motor shafts, gear shafts, machine tool parts, equipment brackets

  • Hydraulic systems — piston rods and cylinders requiring good surface finish and straightness

  • Fasteners and hardware — bolts, screws, pins and general turned parts

Why   Choose   Cold   Drawn   Round   Steel

  • Reduced machining allowance — less material removal, less waste, lower tooling cost

  • Consistent dimensions and hardness between batches (±5 HB), supporting repeatable automatic machining

  • Bright, oxide-free surface — no descaling before machining or plating

  • Precision straightened for stable clamping and feeding in CNC and automatic lathes

Cold   Drawn   Round   Steel   FAQ

Which round steel grade should I choose for machining?

For general turned parts and shafts, 45# (1045/C45/S45C) is the most common choice. For high-speed automatic lathe production, free-cutting 12L14 reduces cycle time and tool wear. Send us your application and our engineers will recommend the right grade free of charge.

What is the difference between cold drawn and hot rolled round bar?

Cold drawn round bar is drawn through a die at room temperature, giving tighter tolerance, brighter surface and better straightness. It is ideal for automatic machining because less material needs to be removed and dimensions stay consistent between batches.

Can you draw non-standard diameters?

Yes, we produce custom intermediate diameters within our drawing capability and can hold special tolerances on a production basis. Share your requirement and we will confirm feasibility and lead time.

Do you supply bright round steel?

Yes. Bright drawn round steel in smaller diameter ranges is available for applications requiring an extra-smooth surface, such as piston rods and linear shafting.

What documents do you provide for export?

Bilingual MTCs with chemical composition and mechanical properties are provided with every batch, and third-party inspection by SGS or BV can be arranged. Full grade and certificate details are on the product detail page.
